Last weekend saw the Aorangi Men’s side compete in the South Island Inter Provincials at the Waitikiri Golf course in Chch. Saturday had us lined up against the local boys from Canterbury who were gunning for us after we defeated them 3 weeks ago in Ashburton.
After the morning rounds, the teams were locked at 2 all (wins to Tim and Daniel).
With some even battles locked in for the afternoon it was all set up for a close finish, and that’s exactly how it ended up with Jordan going down the 18th to gain the vital half point to complete a 4.5 to 3.5 win.
Wins to Josh and Damian completed a great effort by the Aorangi boys.
Unfortunately, we came up against a very ‘well oiled’ Otago machine in our other Saturday match and went down 6 games to 2.
Sunday proved very similar with a solid win over Southland before a close loss to Tasman with many games going the full distance.
The team finished a very credible 3rd with consistent progress towards our overall goal of National Interprovincial success well on track.
Overall it was a fantastic weekend with many outstanding individual performances.
Tim Leonard had 4 wins at number 1 including wins over 2 current NZ players Matt Mclean and Inia Logan and the recently crowned NZ U19 champion Liam Hewitt.
Daniel Perham's victory over NZ player and current NZ PGA champion Kazuma Kobori at number 3 was simply outstanding. The standards Daniel sets and maintains for himself on and off the golf course make him the perfect role model for our younger team members.
Josh Smith continues his great year going through the weekend undefeated in the number 2 position and again setting high standards with his excellent work ethic and commitment.
All in all, it was an amazing weekend for both the men’s and Women’s senior teams with 3rd place finishes and both defeating our arch-rivals Canterbury.
The challenge has now been set for the Freyberg Masters Team to raise the bar even further in Timaru in 2 weeks time.
