The Aorangi women’s team of Catherine Knight, Ginny Bolderston, Angela Gerken, Lynda Brown and Jessica Shearer had a tough opening day at the 2018 Toro Interprovincials.
The team came up against a surprisingly strong Otago side. Knight, Bolderston and Brown all lost their matches to some amazing golf from the Otago opposition. Jessica Shearer had a well fought and even battle against long-time campaigner Susan Grieg to come out with a half.
Gerken was the star of the morning round with a victory over Abigael Crawford.
In the afternoon the team played a very young Auckland side (average age of 13.8 years), a little younger than our side. However, all the games were even. The difference in scoring was purely the ability of the Auckland players to make birdies and eagles. The Auckland side had magnificent distance off the tee, putting them in great set ups to get close to the pin.
Best results for the afternoon were Gerken who halved on the last hole and Jessica Shearer only going down 3/1.
The Aorangi girls all performed brilliantly on a day of warm conditions with a light Norwest. Wednesday will prove to be difficult with rain and wind predicted. The team will be hoping for some better results but will first of come up against North Harbour and Northland.
