Presidents Report 2009
It gives me much pleasure to present the 2nd Annual
report for Aorangi South Canterbury Golf. The amalgamation
has continued to work well with very supportive board members.
Many important
changes have been made, starting with purchasing a new flag with
the new logo. Board members now have a uniform, and just
recently the Men’s representative team were given the go ahead
to buy 10 Black Jackets and new green ties.
Three
Club Forums have
been held, and I hope these have been beneficial to clubs and I
know they have been to the Board. A few changes mainly in the
pennants
Congratulations
to Tim Leonard and Mark O’Malley who were chosen for the NZ Golf
foundation squad and then selected to play in the Federal Golf
Tournament in Canberra.
Also
congratulations to all players who were selected for
representatives fixtures. Coaching has been provided to
these players and this has been very beneficial. We also
have introduced a code of conduct booklet for these players and
Managers will be given a contract to sign.
Thanks to Dawn
and Mark Sandri as GDMs they jointly run the Junior Plus and
Kiwi golf. They are working on new ideas and with
improvements in this field hopefully we will see more junior
names in our clubs. But volunteers in clubs are essential part
of this operation to achieve these numbers.
I have attended
three NZ meetings in Wellington, the last being the most
informative, as it was run as a workshop. We certainly have the
same issues as most other clubs, with lack of members especially
women and volunteers. Changes in the constitution have
taken place and NZ Golf has introduced the HSBC 9 hole
challenge, Junior Tiger and the loyalty card to try to increase
membership.
The Lowe cup has
been won by the Ben Ohau Women withstanding 5 challenges.
A great effort from a small club, who only have 6 or 7 players
to be available to play each time. The St Andrews
Challenge shield is held by the Timaru Golf club men who have
successfully won three times, since they defeated Grand Vue.
In 2010 we are
lucky in the South Island as the Womens Open is at Pegasus,
Christchurch and the Men’s Open is at The Hills, Arowtown.
We have approx
4794 club members of which 2891 are men, 1600 women and 302
Juniors.
The Presidents
Day was held at Timaru Golf Club this year. Only 47 club
members attended which was disappointing. Maybe it is time for
a change and be held on a Sunday, which would allow the workers
to attend. Other Tournaments were also held on that
day that were changed from a previous date. A presentation
was made to Life Members Derek and Patricia Hayman. They
have both dedicated their services to Aorangi South Canterbury
golf over the last 50 years in one way or another, mainly in
Course Rating. They were presented with Gifts and flowers.
Thank you Derek
and Patricia we all have appreciated your time and efforts that
you put into golf in the region.
I would like to
thank all the Board members Peter Hayes, Peter Rae, Lesley
Dobbs, Anne Seed, Neil Macdonald and Michelle Kelly for their
willingness to help and support me. Also to our secretary
Janet Rae, her efficient skills are much appreciated. Thank
you Janet.

Chairperson's Message February 2009
At
the end of June 2008 after many meetings of planning and with
the help of Rob Eccleston from Canterbury Sport, amalgamation
between the Men and Women took place, and our Association is now
known as Aorangi-South Canterbury Golf Incorporated. An interim
committee was formed until the AGM in November 2008.
Janet Rae is
continuing with the secretarial duties, and Peter Rae is holding
the position of Treasurer. If this works out satisfactory, I
see no need to employ an administration officer at this stage.
We
are working on Junior development, and have plans for one or two
fund-raising Tournaments this year. Most clubs are struggling
for members, and we do have to encourage our future players.
We hope that club players will support all tournaments organized
for them and other Association tournaments and this in turn
helps clubs with more revenue plus good golfing fellowship.
The
2009 Waitangi Day Tournament held at Tinwald was very
successful. This is a chance for committee members to meet and
exchange ideas. Congratulations to the Pleasant Point team.
I
wish to thank and acknowledge everyone who contributed to the
amalgamation. To all other volunteers, thankyou for giving up
your time to help with other tasks for Aorangi-South Canterbury
Golf.
I
wish all Club members a successful season, and please support
your Club’s office bearers.

Presidents Report
2008
There have been more changes this year with the
completion of the amalgamation of South Canterbury Women's Golf
and Aorangi Golf Incorporated. I would like to thank all
those that had input into the final document. This
includes all of the board members and members of clubs who made
submissions. I would specially like to thank Rosie
Carruthers for the time and professional effort she put into it.
Also Rob Ecclestone from Canterbury Sport contributed enormously
with his chairmanship, program and time lines. The process
was completed without argument and that augers well for the
future of combining the two organisations.
The effort to get more juniors playing golf
is continuing at District and National level. There has
been an increase in juniors but with a lot of effort going into
Kiwi Golf at primary school and above we hope that the numbers
will increase dramatically over the next five years.
Aorangi South Canterbury Golf has been treated specially by New
Zealand Golf so our funding continues. The major problem
is getting adults to do the Junior Plus course with Mark and
Dawn Sandri and become accredited coaches. I know I am
talking to the converted here in that you people are all doing
your bit for your club. Coaching kids is very much 'doing
as I say, not as I do', you don't have to be a good golfer to
teach, just know how to get on with kids. I encourage you
to go to those who will generally be retired and coerce them
into taking on this role. It will be rewarding and ensure
the future or our clubs. Many thanks to Mark and Dawn for
their efforts in the GDM role through the year.
Sponsorship has not increased this year due
to unfortunate ill health of those who planned to help. I
believe we need to move to a paid manager for our district to
run our pennants, representative golf and general administration
to take pressure off our usually full time working board so
their job is only the decision and policy making. I wish
the new board good luck in achieving this goal next year.
We have a significant surplus this year but
as always this will depend on ongoing grants to support
representative golf. We also need to address some payments
to board members who travel long distance to meetings, and also
other direct costs like phone calls. I also believe we
need some reserves if we are to have employees as administrator
and GDM.
I would like to thank Janet Rae for the
efficient job she has done as secretary, and also keeping me on
the ball at times. Also Peter Rae for his accurate
treasurer's work and also putting the budget together.
This is a big job.
Campbell Paton has done a great job as Match Committee chairman
and as he stands down this year I thank him for his work over
the past five years in setting up templates and protocols for
all events in the Aorangi Calendar.
Our representative teams have had some
success but often we are beaten by our small size as a district
without the number of top players bigger districts can call on.
Once again Mark O'Malley and Tim Leonard performed extremely
well. I wish the Aorangi South Canterbury Team good luck
for the Inter-provincial Tournament happening soon. Thank
you to Brian Leonard and Rod Patterson for their work outside
the board organising senior, junior and masters representatives.
I would also like to recognise all the
members of club committees. It can be very had work and
take a lot of time and it is often not recognised by the average
club member. And last thank you all members of the board
for their hard work, time and support over the past year.
I have enjoyed my time on the board and look forward to playing
more golf with less administration. I am confident the new
board members will move our association forward towards more
members and specially younger members.
Good golfing for the next season.

President Aorangi South Canterbury Golf.

Presidents Message 2008
This year we had a large increase of $4 in our affiliation fees.
This has been done as part of a bigger strategy taking us into
the next decade. It is the responsibility of all of us to
ensure that we have players into the future and our investment
in young elite players and encouraging young players generally
to play golf is the major part of this. We have to get
more juniors into our clubs and as part of that we have to have
competitions that they can play on a regular basis. This
means a pennants competition and regular junior tournaments
around the region so they can test themselves against other
golfers in other clubs. We plan to have a pennant
competition this year for male and female junior golfers.
The need for the increase is made up three parts:
1.
The Junior Plus program costs us more than the funding from New
Zealand Golf and we have to make up this short fall.
2. We have lots of kids wanting to play golf but there is
often no one to help them with the basics and welcome them into
the clubs. This is not a criticism of the clubs or club members
but is a reflection of the fact we don’t have time in our lives
to take on these extra demands. To fill this need we are
planning to use paid person to do this and help get more clubs
train a junior convener. We still have to work out how this
will work but will have to be alongside the Junior Plus
program. We may spend up to $5000 on this before the end of the
financial year.
3. We have had financial losses in the last two years and
would like to be able to put at least a small amount to
reserves. The budget currently has about $2000 surplus.
As we move towards amalgamation with South Canterbury Women’s
Golf we are looking towards reducing the work load on Board
members by considering employing a part time administration
officer in the future. It is important that we have some
financial resilience for this plan.
Amalgamation is proceeding very well.
The requirements of adopting a new constitution and then
necessary SGM's required will mean men's and women's golf will
probably be one by about June.
There have been some changes to the non handicap pennant
competition this year. Holmes Cup will have 8 players per
team (previously 4) aimed at giving as many players as possible
the chance to play against our top players and to encourage more
to sep up and be available for representative competition.
This year we have a new sponsor and the grades are now known as
the Rothbury Homes Cup, the South Canterbury Finance Cup,
the Redpath's Cup and the Patterson Cup.
Good Golfing

Presidents Report 2007:
This year has at times been very difficult starting with losing
Mike Davies after a very promising start. We did however learn
some important lessons and have made some changes as a result.
The administration role was taken back to the members of the
board and the role of Golf Development Manager made totally
separate. Peter Rae took over the finance role and has done a
marvellous job of getting our finances sorted out and back into
order. I can’t thank Peter enough for the amount of time and
effort he has put into this role. His wife Janet has done the
secretarial work and this has been performed very efficiently.
The role of GDM was given to Mark and Dawn Sandri after a break
of several months. This was unfortunate but was due to New
Zealand Golf Inc. not fronting up with the Junior Plus training
so they could officially start into the job. The Junior Plus
program has been very effective in the two clubs started by Mike
Davies and we now have to ensure its ongoing success. The
program was put together by NZ Golf to ensure that juniors
joining clubs have a junior convenor to look after them for
basic coaching and to ensure they are welcomed into the club.
The second part of the program is to visit schools and move kids
into the clubs where there is a program waiting to look after
them.
The board has asked for a big increase for affiliation fees this
year. This is mainly to cover the cost of getting juniors into
clubs. It will also help with representative funding and some
administration. The cost of representative golf is high and I
know many golfers think it is not justified, but we must have
reps or we have no national players. If we had no JAB rep rugby
teams we would have no All Blacks. This increase will only
bring us up to a level comparative to other districts and still
below the average.
Our pennant competition has gone very well again and I thank
Campbell Paton and his match committee for a very well organised
program. This year has seen some questions asked as to the
amount of participation in our premier Holmes Cup competition
and a questionnaire sent to all players has initiated some
changes.
The amalgamation with South Canterbury Women’s Golf is
continuing to progress slowly but steadily with Paul Gardner
doing a great job of keeping things moving along with help from
Rob Eccleston of Canterbury Sport. We hope to be amalgamated
early next year. In the mean time we continue to work together
where we can with women’s golf including things like the
Cromwell age group tournament, the Junior Plus program and some
representative fixtures like the one against Canterbury
recently.
Our representative teams have not had a great year but we have
had some individuals have stood out. Our juniors in particular
give us great hope for our future. Tim Leonard, Matt Bruce,
Mark O’Malley and Dan Pearce have all shone at times and there
is another group close behind. The high performance coaches
from New Zealand Golf commented on the ability, attitude and
etiquette of our Aorangi Golfers both male and female at the
clinic held at Levels in July. We have been encouraged by them
to keep this group together with coaching and also giving them
experience at high level tournaments around the country. This
will happen where it can but it costs both parents and the
association to do this. We have co-opted Peter Hayes, Rod
Patterson and Brian Leonard on to the board and these are
responsible for representative business. They have also
injected new enthusiasm for raising sponsorship and bring a
knowledge and understanding of representative golf that others
on the board do not have. I would also mention Ray Greenie
Grant for his good work with representative golf during his time
on the board.
Sponsorship is an ongoing problem and is virtually the only way
to increase our income other than raising levies. We have still
not secured a major sponsor with naming rights to our pennant
competition. We currently have an application in to Meridian
but they have indicated their program is full for two years so
we can’t hold our breath on that one. Any suggestions of a
possible major sponsor or help in securing sponsorship will be
welcomed by the board. We have some loyal sponsors and I thank
them for their support.
I would also like to recognise all the members of club
committees. It can be very hard work and take a lot of time and
it is often not recognised by the average club member.
And last thank you all members of the board for their hard work,
time and support over the past year.
Good golfing for the next season.
