SBS
Invitational 7/8 March, Otatara,
Invercargill
The team performed creditably in the 2009 SBS
Invitational, billed as the Teams Interpovincial Strokeplay
Championship.
After the first day Aorangi finished 8th on a total of 582 only
8 shots from joint leaders North Harbour and Bay of Plenty on
574.
Day One Aorangi scores: Peter Hayes 73,73; Mark O'Malley 74,72;
Simon Wright 74,75; Daniel Perham 74,84; Tim Leonard 69, 72.
On Sunday the weather was rain in the morning with a strong
south wester all day. They were very trying conditions.
Mark O'Malley showed his consistency with rounds of 72 and 74.
Mark O'Malley is now ranked the number 1 Junior under age 19 in
New Zealand.
The teams overall finishing place of 8th was 26 shots behind
eventual winners North Harbour and only 10 shots from 3rd place.
There were some large provinces behind Aorangi such as Taranaki,
Canterbury, Wellington, Manawatu-Wanganui to name a few.

Secondary School Boys - 30 September -
3 October
20 players and 4 adults
travelled to Cromwell Tuesday 30 September.
Wednesday 27 holes –
Michael Berry best gross -
beaten 2nd round match play
A number of children qualified and made finals, no winners of
finals.
I travelled Friday with
Tim, Matt, and Mark O’Malley to play Piper Cup (Otago) and
Simpson Cup (Southland), with players playing 5 from each team,
team of 10.
After 1 round:
2.5 Aorangi - 2.5 Otago;
1 Aorangi - 4
Southland
Saturday final result:
Otago 6 - Aorangi 4;
Aorangi 6 - Southland 4
A pleasing, but
disappointing result, with all our games against Southland being
won on Saturday.
Matt Bruce 2 up with 2
to go (half), B.McHaffie 3 up with 4 to go (lost) were crucial
games. Half would have seen the Piper Cup coming back to
Aorangi.
Very pleasing to see the
younger, inexperienced, players coming through.
Overall, a very good tournament.
Brian Leonard.
Triangular at
Alexandra 20 - 21 September - Aorangi, Southland and Otago
Saturday – fine,
Sunday – Wet and windy
Senior:
M O'Malley, R Stills, T Leonard, P Hayes (C), N Heney, M Davies,
B Houston, G Simpson, R O'Neill, R Cockburn.
Tim Leonard and Mark O’Malley both
played excellent golf with both finishing 4 under for their two
games.
Mark had a half on Saturday and won convincingly on Sunday.
Tim had two convincing wins.
Overall the team lost to Otago 5.5 –
4.5; and 6.5 to 3.5 to Southland.
Pleasingly the top five players beat Otago and halved with
Southland.
10 men found us out of depth at the bottom end but overall the
result was pleasing.
Masters:
R Bell (C), J Smitheram, M Peattie, W Lloyd, G Gunn, R Maxwell,
B Jury, A Middlebrook.
With three regular
players unavailable, we struggled to be competitive. John
Smitheram had two wins, while Graeme
Gunn shot 3 under on Saturday. Result:
Lost to Southland
5.5 – 2.5; Lost to
Otago 6.5 – 1.5
Under 19:
M Barry, C Grant, M Bruce (C), C Tomanson, J Shaw, N Wightman.
Matt Bruce back from injury 2 wins.
With 5 juniors in senior team gave the
opportunity for some younger players.
Result: Beat
Southland 4 - 2;
Lost to Otago 5 – 1
