The 2017 South Island Men's Interprovincials were played at the Otatara Golf Club in Invercargill.
The team of eight was without Dan Perham and due to the unavailability of Hamish Scarsbrook for the season the selectors struggled to find eight triallists available.
Thanks to Hamish Niles, for making himself available, especially as he had just flown in from a weekend at the Melbourne Cup. A fine half to Hamish on the last day against Canterbury made the journey worth it.
Thanks to all the players for being available and making the long journey to Invercargill.
REPORT - GRAEME KEEN (MANAGER)
S.I Inter Provincial- 11th & 12th Nov 2017- Invercargill GC
The team drove to Invercargill in a very strong cold wind and it was the same, with rain when the guys played their practise round.
Saturday was cool and with a few showers and Sunday pretty similar apart from a period of sunshine during the morning.
Invercargill Golf Club at Otatara had just cut down a huge amount of large trees and although the area was G.U.R it was still very messy. If your ball went in there, it was unlikely you would find it. Free drop, no penalty of course. The course was also extremely wet underfoot as rain had deluged for days on end after a very dry few months. 15cm placing on your own fairway was in place.
It was a disappointing result for our team who tried their best against better opposition on the days.
Results: Southland 7 & half, Aorangi - half (Jordan Green)
Tasman 6 - Aorangi 2 (Jordan & Damian)
Otago 8 - Aorangi 0
Canterbury 7 & half, Aorangi - half (Hamish)
There were some very close games that could have gone either way for us but sadly didn’t.
Matt McLean (formally of Aorangi) playing at number 2 for Canterbury was 7 under the card (including an albatross) when he won his match 8/6. It was awesome to watch.
The event was won by Canterbury, ahead of Tasman.
